RESPECT has been leading the way in positive behaviour support training and the reduction of restrictive practice for over 20 years.

Twenty years? That’s right, for the last two decades, we’ve been actively campaigning against prone or face down restraint (when someone is pinned on a surface and physically prevented from moving out of this position) and pain compliance (the use of pain techniques  as a form of managing and understanding behaviours of concern.

We believe the service user should be at the heart of what we do.

We believe a person should be treated with respect irrespective of the circumstances in which they come into contact with services.

But we also believe in providing professional training to ensure staff and organisations are equipped with the right skills and knowledge.

That’s why we’ve developed RESPECT, a tailored training package to prevent, de-escalate and manage challenging situations. A person-centred approach based on support not control. Training that helps you understand the reasons behind individual’s behaviours of concern and provides the skills to de-escalate and manage it in the least restrictive way. Helping to ensure individuals and organisations have the knowledge needed to keep both themselves and the people in their care safe.

Used by leading mental health services provider NAViGO, as well as a variety of national organisations including education, health and social care facilities, RESPECT is certified by the British Institute of Learning Disabilities Association of certified training (BILDACT), one of the first in the UK to be certified against the Restraint Reduction Network Training Standards.

RESPECT is also monitored by a Standards Committee that has representation from senior partners within health, social care and education settings who work with national (and international) steering groups and initiatives such as Positive and Safe.

RESPECT Training was initially created to support the work of the NHS mental health services provider – NAViGO.

Offering a range of mental health services from acute inpatient to community facilities, NAViGO also provide specialist support and have developed income-generating, commercially viable businesses that provide training, education and employment opportunities.

Named one of the top 100 not-for-profit organisations to work for by The Sunday Times, five years in succession, NAViGO are the Health and Social Care Social Enterprise of the Year 2019.

What makes RESPECT truly unique, is that our training is developed by service users. And they, alongside a team of experienced healthcare professionals from across NAViGO came together to create the RESPECT training model.

A unique series of positive behaviour support techniques, skills, best practice and values we now share with other people.
